Pitru Paksha lasts for 16 days. According to the scriptures, the day of Pitru Paksha is very good for performing Shradh and Tarpan of ancestors. Pitru Paksha starts from Pratipada Tithi of Bhadrapad month. This time Pitru Paksha is starting from the day of September Purnima Tithi and it will end on the day of Amavasya. Women can wear white or yellow clothes during Pitru Paksha. Only married women should perform Shradh. While performing Shradh, women should not perform tarpan with Kusha and water and should also not perform tarpan with black sesame seeds.
According to astrology, pregnant women should avoid killing dogs, cows, crows, etc. during these days of Pitru Paksha. If a pregnant woman harasses or kills any living creature during this time, it causes Pitra Dosh and you may have to face problems due to this.
Women Should Take Special Care of These 6 Things During Pitru Paksha
- Women should light a diya in the evening during Pitru Paksha. Keep in mind that during Pitru Paksha, keep a diya outside the house facing south. People who live in flats etc. can light a diya on the balcony of their house facing south.
- During Pitru Paksha, you should take care that there are no arguments in the family. Women should try to maintain harmony in their families.
- Women should not cook food for Shraddha Tarpan during menstruation. If there is any other woman in the house, then you can get it cooked by her. Or the boy of the house can also cook food.
- During Pitru Paksha, do not sweep or do any other cleaning work in the house in the evening.
- Whenever you cook food every day during Pitru Paksha, take out a part of it in advance and feed it to the cow in the name of ancestors. You must do this on every tithi.
- On the day of Shraddha or Tarpan in Pitru Paksha, cook only the food of the ancestors’ choice on that day.
These Things Are Forbidden in Pitru Paksha
Doing any auspicious work in Shradh Paksha is considered forbidden. One should not buy any new things on these days. Also, Satvik food should be prepared during this time. Tamasik food should be avoided. Cooking food with iron utensils should be avoided during Shradh rituals. Brass, copper, or other metal utensils should be used in Pitru Paksha. Apart from this, hair and beard should not be cut during this time. Cutting hair and beard leads to loss of money. Food made from garlic and onion should not be eaten during Shradh Paksha.
