What To Do With Rakhi After Raksha Bandhan?

Often, after Rakshabandhan is over, brothers remove the rakhi from their wrists and keep it here and there. But doing so is not considered auspicious. Doing so may cause side effects.

Rakshabandhan is one of the major festivals of Hinduism, which is celebrated as a symbol of the unbreakable relationship between brother and sister. On this day, sisters tie the Raksha Sutra in the hands of their brothers and bless them, while brothers promise to protect their sisters for the rest of their lives. Raksha Bandhan is celebrated every year on the full moon(Purnima) date of the month of Shravan. This year this date is falling on 30 August. But this time along with the full moon date, the shadow of Bhadra will also remain. Tying Rakhi in the shade of Bhadra is not considered auspicious. In such a situation, the auspicious time to tie Rakhi falls on the 30th and 31st of August.

There are many rules regarding tying rakhi to brothers. Similarly, after tying the rakhi, different rules have been given to remove them. People are often in a dilemma as to what should be done with the Rakhi adorned on the wrist after Raksha Bandhan is over. Many people take off the Rakhi and keep it occasionally, but doing so is not considered right. This can cause side effects. In such a situation, let us know what should be done with the rakhis adorned on the wrist.

According to the astrologer, after Rakshabandhan is over, take off the rakhi the next day and keep it at a place where other things related to you and your sister are kept. Like pictures of the two of you together, your toys, or something else. Keep it safe till next year’s Raksha Bandhan. Then next year, when the festival of Rakshabandhan comes, let this rakhi flow in water.

What To Do With Broken Rakhis?

If the rakhi gets broken while removing it from the wrist, it should not be kept carefully nor thrown here and there. He should either be kept under a tree along with a one rupee coin or floated in the water.

Some Rules Regarding Tying Rakhi

Some rules have also been given regarding tying rakhi in Hinduism.

  • Sisters should never tie a black-colored or broken rathi on the wrist of brothers.
  • Brothers should always cover their heads with a handkerchief while tying Rakhi.
  • Rakhi should never be tied during the Bhadra period(Bhadra Kaal).
  • While tying Rakhi, brothers should not sit on the ground but on the floor.
  • While tying the ashes, the sisters should face the southwest direction.
